  Opal Mining at Lightning Ridge

The Walk In Mine was originally mined during the early 1960's by Sandy (Amos) Randell, who came to Lightning Ridge to find his fortune mining for the 'famous' Lightning Ridge Black Opal.

Unfortunately not a lot of good opal was found at the Walk In Mine so Sandy decided to open it up for visitors so they could go underground and get a feel for what Opal mining is all about.

The Walk In Mine sits on the Ridge of the Bald Hill Opal Field where you can participate in a complimentary tea and coffee and take in the views of the valley.

Here you can ponder the hardships endured by our miners to find that elusive GEM Australia's National Gemstone that precious 'BLACK OPAL?

Our business offers underground Opal Mine tours and Opal field tours along with a number of 'great' package deals.
